2 Peter 2:4-10
Words Of Truth

Words Of Truth

"That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth..." (Proverbs 22:21).

Second Peter 2:4-10

I. Introduction:

A. Think about those who stand in the way of others being saved (Matthew 23:13 and Luke 11:52).

  1. God wants all to be saved (I Timothy 2:3-4).
  2. So, where does that put those who stand in the way of salvation (Acts 13:4-12)?
B. Those who choose to be teachers are warned (James 3:1).

  1. Having a certain level of knowledge doesn’t make a person a capable, qualified teacher (I Timothy 1:3-7 and Hebrews 5:13).
  2. If someone leads others to damnation, both are lost even if done in ignorance (Isaiah 3:12 and Luke 6:39).

II. Body: II Peter 2:4-10

A. Lest one think they’ll escape God’s judgment, what did He do to the angels that sinned (Jude 1:6).

  1. Consider John’s account of the angels that sinned (Revelation 12:7-9).
  2. They are in “ταρταρόω” [tartaroō] reserved till judgment. That is, they are bound until the time to get the final judgment (Matthew 8:28-29 and Matthew 25:41).
B. Lest one think they’ll escape God’s judgment, God destroyed all of humanity except for Noah and his family (Genesis 6:5-8, Genesis 7:1, and Genesis 7:19-24).

  1. Such judgment comes when sinners were woefully unaware (Matthew 24:37-39).
  2. Noah was spared because he obeyed God (Genesis 6:9, Genesis 6:22, Genesis 7:5, and Hebrews 11:7).
  3. Grace didn’t save anyone else (cf. Romans 6:1-2).
C. Lest one think they’ll escape God’s judgment, consider what happened to Sodom and Gomorrha (Genesis 19:24-28).

  1. Those cities serve as an example (Jude 1:7).
  2. Even the pleading of Abraham could not save those cities (Genesis 18:20-33; Genesis 19:13).
D. Lot on the other hand serves as an example of delivering the godly from what comes with and upon the ungodly (I Thessalonians 1:10 and II Thessalonians 1:4-10).

  1. The final Judgment Day is a day of separation (Matthew 25:31-34; 25:46).
  2. Our just God (Deuteronomy 32:4) judges based on deeds (John 5:28-29).
E. Those that walk after the flesh (Romans 8:1-8).

  1. Simple, the works of the flesh result in being lost (Galatians 5:19-21).
  2. No unclean person will inherit the kingdom (Ephesians 5:5).
  3. One cannot be faithful to God while despising those in authority (Jude 1:8).
  1. One must submit to the authority of the Lord (Matthew 28:18-20, Colossians 1:12-18, and Hebrews 5:8-9).
  2. One must also be in submission to those the Lord put in authority (I Corinthians 11:3, Ephesians 5:21-6:4, Hebrews 13:7; 13:17, and I Peter 2:13-17).
  3. When it comes to man, there is only one exception (Acts 5:29).
  1. Those false teachers are daring, they are not afraid to speak evil of those who are due honor and glory (Jude 1:10).

III. Conclusion: II Peter 2:11-16
