2 Peter 1:12-18
Words Of Truth

Words Of Truth

"That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth..." (Proverbs 22:21).

Second Peter 1:12-18

I. Introduction:

A. There is a reason things need to be brought to remembrance (Hebrews 12:5, Hebrews 13:1-2, and Hebrews 13:16).

  1. There are those who are “forgetful hearers” (James 1:21-25).
  2. Sometimes needing to remember is about recollection of something in light of something else (Matthew 16:1-12).
B. There is also the need for occasional reassurance (Acts 18:23).

  1. There are those that would like to trouble us as we see in the first century (Acts 15:24 and Galatians 5:12).
  2. So the work of edification, of building up, is the important counter to that (I Timothy 1:3-7).

II. Body: II Peter 1:12-18

A. Putting in remembrance (II Peter 3:1-2).

  1. A major part of teaching is reminding (Romans 15:14-15, I Corinthians 4:17, Philippians 3:1, I Timothy 4:1-9, II Timothy 1:6, II Timothy 2:14, Jude 1:5, and Jude 1:17-19).
  2. Bringing to remembrance is just that. It is not “new” information. Teaching what is already known for growth purposes (I Thessalonians 4:1-2).
  3. The Lord had showed Peter his decease. This could be recent or a recollection of something Jesus showed him in the past (cf. John 21:15-19).
B. Having not followed cunningly devised fables (Colossians 1:5 and I John 5:20; cf. John 14:6).

  1. There are those fables that turn from the truth of which saints are to be opposed (II Timothy 4:1-5 and Titus 1:10-14).
  2. The eyewitnesses (John 1:14, Acts 1:1-8, Acts 2:32, Acts 4:33, Acts 5:29-32, Acts 10:39-41, I Corinthians 15:1-11, and I John 1:1-3).
  3. The pattern of eyewitnesses as evidence (Deuteronomy 17:6, Deuteronomy 19:15-16, Matthew 18:15-20, I Timothy 5:19, etc.). *MUST BE CREDIBLE (Exodus 23:1).
  4. Creditability in that the words of credible prophets aligned with the accounts of those witnesses too (Luke 24:44 and Acts 26:22; cf. II Peter 1:19-21).
C. From the holy mount (Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-9, and Luke 9:28-36).

  1. The greatest witness of all (John 5:31-39).
  2. The Father testified of His Son (I John 5:9).
