Being Great By Jesus’ Definition
I. Introduction:
A. The desire to be seen as great is not a new problem among mankind (Isaiah 14:12-15).
- This was the king of Babylon (Isaiah 14:4).
- No matter how high Babylon got to, humility was coming (Jeremiah 51:44-49).
- Remember Diotrephes (III John 1:9-11).
- Think about the scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 23:1-12).
II. Body: Mark 10:35-45
A. What did Jesus say in the context of washing His disciples’s feet (John 13:16)?
- Jesus, the Lord of lords; King of kings (I Timothy 6:14-15), recognized His place (John 8:48-50).
- Jesus said the Father is greater than Him (John 14:28).
- Using our freedom in Christ to be servants (Galatians 5:13).
- As we see Paul did for the furtherance of the Gospel (I Corinthians 9:19-23 and II Corinthians 4:5).
- Keeping our minds on Jesus as our example (Romans 15:1-3).
- Singing “How Great I Am” to God doesn’t put you on high (Luke 18:9-14).
- Consider what Jesus taught about being like children (Matthew 18:1-4).
III. Conclusion: Understand that, by Jesus’ definition, being chief among men means you are a servant (Matthew 20:26-28 and Luke 22:24-27).
