Not long ago a fellow Christian made a statement that was odd, for me. The statement that
was made is the title of our article, “the woman’s role is changing”. We’re facing the first time
that a woman ran for President of the U.S. (thankfully she lost). We are facing the second time
a woman has been selected to run as the Vice President of the U.S. (which we will see is not
pleasing to God- cf. Isaiah 3:12). Women have moved up in authority in the business world,
denominational world, and even among many apostate churches of Christ. I know this is a
heated debate. I will keep my two cents out of it since my opinion does not matter one bit
(Psalms 84:12, Psalms 118:8, Psalms 146:3, Proverbs 14:12, I Corinthians 2:4-5, I Corinthians
3:19, and I Corinthians 4:6). Therefore, the remainder of this article shall be just what God says
on the matter (with the exception only of subtitles).
- “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him
an help meet for him. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the
field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call
them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And
Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field;
but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. And the LORD God caused a
deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the
flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a
woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones,
and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and
they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not
ashamed” (Genesis 2:18-25).
- “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the
woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God” (I Corinthians 11:3).
- “For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man
created for the woman; but the woman for the man” (I Corinthians 11:8-9).
- “Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow
thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall
rule over thee” (Genesis 3:16).
- “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the
husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is
the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the
wives be to their own husbands in every thing... Nevertheless let every one of you in
particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her
husband” (Ephesians 5:22-24; 33).
- “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord”
- “Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the
word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they
behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that
outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the
ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after
this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned
themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed
Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not
afraid with any amazement” (I Peter 3:1-6).
- “The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false
accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the
young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet,
chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of
God be not blasphemed” (Titus 2:3-5).
- “Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to
speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if
they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for
women to speak in the church” (I Corinthians 14:34-35).
- “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with
shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. Let the woman
learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp
authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity
and holiness with sobriety” (I Timothy 2:9-15).
- “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say” (Luke 6:46)?
- “But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it” (Luke
- “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word
that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day” (John 12:48).
