A Name Does Not Make A Brother

Outline By: Brian A. Yeager (http://www.wordsoftruth.net)

I. Introduction:

A. We understand there is only one body authorized and recognized by God (Romans 12:4-5, Ephesians 4:4-6, and Colossians 3:15).

1. We understand that the church is the one body of Christ (Ephesians 1:22-23, Colossians 1:18, and Colossians 1:24).

2. We understand that the one body/church is the church of Christ (Romans 16:16).

3. We understand that you are a member of the church of Christ when you are properly converted to Christ and continue in His will (Acts 2:37-47).

4. We know that Christ established the church of Christ (Matthew 16:18).

B. We know that wearing the proper name matters (Acts 4:10-12).

1. Yet, being among even the “called” (II Thessalonians 2:13-14) doesn’t always mean we’re with the saved (Matthew 22:14).

2. Those desirous of “creeping in” hide under the “right name” (II Corinthians 11:12-15 and Jude 3-4).

3. We’re not supposed to be their prey (Ephesians 4:14), thus we need to remind ourselves of who are brethren really are!

II. Body: Who is my brother (Matthew 12:46-50 and II Corinthians 6:14-18)?

A. Brethren are those who DO the WILL of GOD (Luke 6:46, John 15:10, Hebrews 5:8-9, and I John 2:3-6).

1. Those who do not obey God are not His people (Acts 3:19-23; cf. John 12:48).

2. Remember, this means doing ALL of God’s will (Matthew 23:23-24, I Timothy 5:21, and James 2:10).

B. Our fellowship is limited to those in the light (I John 1:3-7).

1. That means we cannot jointly participate [spiritually] with those in that are in any form of error (Psalms 1:1-2, Psalms 26:4-5, Jeremiah 15:17, Romans 16:17, I Corinthians 10:21, Ephesians 5:11, II Thessalonians 3:14, and I Timothy 5:22).

2. If they don’t live the word of God they are not in the light (Isaiah 8:20; cf. Luke 4:4).

3. Thus, we find that the Scriptures demand we only be in fellowship with those of correct like-mindedness (I Corinthians 1:10 and Philippians 3:16-17).

C. Understand this, the wolves are not the one’s in denominationalism.  The wolves are those who try to look and sound like us (Matthew 7:15-20 and Acts 20:29-31).

1. People in denominations are OBVIOUSLY false, just as the heathen in the O.T. that worshipped other gods (Judges 2:10-13; cf. Joshua 24:16 and Jeremiah 13:10).

2. It’s the one’s “among us” who play the part (Mark 7:6), but don’t at all agree with the truth that we need to be aware of (Acts 15:24 and Galatians 2:1-5). [Kenny Wright, Herman Starkey, Pat Kastrin, etc.].

3. This applies to other “congregations” that have a sign with the right name on it, but what about what’s being…

a. …Practiced in worship (Colossians 2:18-23)?

b. …Practiced as works of the church (Ephesians 5:24; cf. II Corinthians 8:4, II Corinthians 11:8, and Ephesians 4:16)?

c. …Taught in classes /sermons / tracts (I Timothy 1:3-7)?

d. …Who & what is supported by that “congregation” (I Corinthians 16:1-4 and Philippians 4:14-16)?

e. …Not being taught or practiced [error by omission of truth] (Acts 20:26-27 and II John 9-11)?

f. …Who they accept into their fellowship {false teachers in meetings, false teachers in writing, withdrawn from members, no questions membership, etc.} (Revelation 2:14 and Revelation 2:20)?

III. Conclusion: There is more to being a Christian than just sitting a building with the right name on the sign (John 8:31-32).
