Exposing The Christian Scientists (Part 2)
By: Brian A. Yeager

Many false religions believe in modern day miracles by God, through the hands of men. Certainly, most would concur that miracles such as healing, raising the dead, etc. did occur in times past (Matthew 8:14-17, Matthew 9:35, Matthew 10:1-8, John 12:9, Acts 9:32-41, and Acts 28:8). The problem is, as we shall see in this article, such miracles were intended to be temporary. The time and purpose for God working through men to raise the dead, heal the sick, speak in unknown tongues, etc. has come to pass. Thus, when religions claim such today they are liars. Sadly, they even know they’re liars, which is shown every time they are challenged to PROVE that they can do a miracle. Before we get to all of that, let’s notice what the Christian Scientists believe on the subject of modern day miracles.

The Christian Scientists Claim They Can Miraculously Heal, Raise The Dead, Etc.

When examining “Christian Science”, this is what I found: “Christian Science,
discovered by Mary Baker Eddy, is a universal, practical system of spiritual, prayer-based Christian healing, available and accessible to everyone” (http://www.churchofchristscientist.org/aboutchristianscience/). The Christian Scientists even believe they cannot fail in doing miracles: “If the student adheres strictly to the teachings of Christian Science and ventures not to break its rules, he cannot fail of success in healing” (http://www.spirituality.com/dt/book_lookup.jhtml?reference=SH%2B448&marks=false&baseURL=book_lookup.jhtml).

The Christian Scientists have moneymaking practitioners of their faith. Isn’t that contrary to what Jesus told His disciples when they healed the sick (cf. Matthew 10:8-10)? Notice their statements: “Christian Science practitioners are full-time healers who devote their lives to the application of prayer, as taught in Christian Science, to any situation that is brought to their attention… Christian Science nurses provide spiritual reassurance and skillful physical care for anyone relying on Christian Science for healing” (
http://www.churchofchristscientist.org/healingresources/index.jhtml). When you go to the website listed and click to “learn more”, you find there are fees by these self-employed liars.

On the website of Christian Scientists you can order material that has testimonies of their “healings”. Notice what is said: “You can read testimonies of healing resulting from Christian Science treatment which have appeared in The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel, including testimonies relating to arthritis, cancer, child developmental delay, and malaria” (
http://www.churchofchristscientist.org/healingresources/christian-science-practitioners.jhtml). Now, what does the Bible say?

What The Scriptures Teach About The Cessation of Miracles?

Let us begin by noticing the purpose of miracles:
“Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen… How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will” (Mark 16:14-20 and Hebrews 2:3-4)?

From the Scriptures quoted above you can see that miracles were performed to confirm the words, spoken by men, of God (cf. II Samuel 23:2). In the first century, one could not call upon the audience to turn in their Bibles to the book of Mark or Hebrews. These books were not written and distributed fully at that time. Today, we have the fully revealed word of God that throughly furnishes us unto all good works (II Timothy 3:16-17). We have all things pertaining unto life and godliness (II Peter 1:3-4). We have the testimonies of the eyewitnesses of the resurrected Christ written for us (Acts 2:32, Acts 3:15, Acts 10:39-41, Acts 22:15-16, etc.). We can fully search the Scriptures to know what truth is (Acts 17:10-11), rather than needing to see someone perform something miraculous so that we can know they are genuine. Thus, the purpose of miracles of God, through the hands of men, has come to pass.

Miracles of God, through the hands of men, were intended to be temporary. Notice:
“Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity” (I Corinthians 13:8-13). Here we can see that once mankind could know the truth, the temporary purpose of miracles would end. As we have already seen, we have the revealed word of God wherein we can know the truth.

One final thing is necessary to show the conclusion of the miraculous age. One had to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit to be able to perform miracles (I Corinthians 12:3-11). This occurred through Holy Spirit Baptism or through the laying on of an Apostle’s hands (Acts 1:5, Acts 2:1-4, Acts 10:44-48, Acts 11:1-18, Acts 8:12-24 and Acts 19:1-7). Holy Spirit baptism ceased early in the first century (Ephesians 4:5 and I Peter 3:20-21) and there are no Apostles today to give the Holy Spirit to man (Acts 1:15-26 and I Corinthians 15:1-8). Therefore, we know that the age of miracles, through the hands of men, has ended.

Conclusion

More could be said of the Christian Scientist’s doctrines, but the core of their faith has been exposed. They readily admit being founded by a woman (not God – Galatians 1:6-12) and their core doctrine is modern day miracles, which have ceased. Having exposed both of these errors, we shall move on to exposing the errors of Islam (Muslims).
