Exposing The Christian Scientists (Part 1)
By: Brian A. Yeager
When you read the Bible you find the promise of Christ to build His church (Matthew 16:13-18). You know that His church was founded in the first century and the saved where added to His church then (Acts 2:47). Therefore, when a church admits that they had been started at a later date than the early first century, they are admitting that they are not the church of Christ we read about in God’s word (Romans 16:16). Moreover, Christ is the founder and Head of His body the church (Acts 20:28, Ephesians 1:22-23, and Hebrews 3:6). When a church acknowledges a different founder and/or head, they are admitting that they are not the church of Christ. With that knowledge, we shall begin exposing the Christian Scientists (a.k.a. “Church of Christ, Scientist”).
Wrong Time + Wrong Founder = The Wrong People!
The website of the Christian Scientists says this: “When was the Church of Christ, Scientist, founded? We’re a young church with deep roots in early Christianity. Mary Baker Eddy founded the Church of Christ, Scientist in 1879 ‘to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.’ (Church Manual, page 17). Eddy grew up in the Congregational church in New England and loved and revered the life and teachings of Christ Jesus. She founded a church so that his healing works would be more universally understood and practiced” (http://christianscience.com/questions/about-church/).
When you study your Bible you will not find the name “Mary Baker Eddy”. There is only one name that can save us. That name is Jesus Christ (Acts 4:10-12). In addition to that, you will find Scriptures that prove a woman was not chosen to begin or have a leadership role in the Lord’s church (I Corinthians 14:34-35 and I Timothy 2:11-12). When the Lord chose His Apostles, you will notice that they were all males (Matthew 10:1-4, Acts 1:15-26, and Romans 1:1). When Gospel preachers were trained to continue the spread of the Gospel, they were all men (II Timothy 2:2). Beyond all of those things, as we noted at the beginning of our article, this church was founded at the wrong time by the wrong person. Next, we will see that they are a church of popular vote.
A Church of Democracy?!?!?
When you read these statements that I am about to share with you, you’ll see that we will have a lot we could talk about in the remainder of this article: “How is your church organized and governed? Local branch churches are democratically run, while The Mother Church and its activities are stewarded by a five-person Board of Directors. The Board is responsible for overseeing a range of activities including an international Board of Lectureship, a Board of Education, Church membership, and the publishing of Mary Baker Eddy’s writings. Guiding the Church’s global ministry is a simple 100-page Church Manual which reflects Eddy’s vision of a Church living by the Golden Rule and unencumbered by too much human organization” (http://christianscience.com/questions/about-church/).
We should all realize that we need authority from the Lord for ALL that we say and do (Proverbs 30:5-6, Jeremiah 7:30-31, Matthew 28:19-20, Luke 11:28, John 12:48-50, I Peter 4:11, I John 2:3-6, II John 9, and Revelation 22:14). When you read your Bible you do not read anything about “your church”, a “mother church”, “board of directors”, “board of education”, “Mary Baker Eddy’s writings”, a “100-page Church manual”, being “democratically run”, etc. In that alone, we have shown the absolute idiocy of this religion. In fact, the quote above shows their founder didn’t even want the burdensome human organization that now exists in HER religion. So, not only are they unscriptural, but they are even apart from their founder’s ideals.
A church wherein there are human decision makers is not THE church that the Lord died to establish (cf. Ephesians 5:25). The real church of Christ is a monarchy (“undivided rule or absolute sovereignty by a single person”; Webster’s Dictionary). Jesus Christ alone has all authority (Matthew 28:18 and I Peter 3:21-22). He is our king (John 18:36 and I Timothy 6:14-15). Christ alone is the head of His body, the church (Ephesians 5:23 and Colossians 1:12-19).
Since the Lord is the Head of the church and we need to follow His word to know what is right and wrong (Colossians 3:17), it is logical to conclude we cannot vote on anything. However, we shall not rest this section of our article with our logic. After all, our logic could be flawed (Proverbs 14:12, Proverbs 16:25, Proverbs 21:2, and Jeremiah 10:23).
Using the Scriptures we will see that we cannot “vote” on something and that become the rule that governs us Spiritually. Notice: “Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition” (Mark 7:1-9; see also: Galatians 1:6-12 and Colossians 2:8; 18-23).
We can see clearly that the “Church of Christ, Scientists” is merely another fraudulent religion trying to pretend that they are a divine organization. Even their own statements, as we’ve noted above, prove they are not followers of God. God’s people do what they “receive of the Lord” (cf. I Corinthians 11:23), while this religion does what they have received of women and then men. We have more to expose concerning this false religion. Our next article will address their views of miraculous healings.
