Digging a Little Deeper...
© 2007 This study was prepared for the midweek studies of the Sunrise Acres church of Christ in El Paso, TX by Brian A. Yeager. This
study may be used for edification and teaching, but is not to be sold or used by lazy preachers who visit this site on Wednesdays and
Saturdays as a means to aid them in not doing their own studying.
NOTE: Some of the files in this study include PDF files. You may need to download a free PDF reader to see them. I

How to do a basic word study…
1. Select a word you want to find information about. For our study, the word shall be
“experiment” as used in II Corinthians 9:13 in the King James Version. If you do not
have a King James Version of the Bible contact me by using the tab above (Contact
Information). You might even consider looking at the New King James and the
American Standard 1901 to see the translation of the term in those versions as a study
aid.
2. Use Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance to find out the Strong's number which will be
used to look up the term in a Greek - English Lexicon (Dictionary). If you do not have a
Strong's Concordance, contact me and I'll point you to some online tools to use. To see
how this is done using the book, click HERE.
3. After acquiring a Strong's number, we will now use it to define the word. For our
study, we will use Thayer's Greek - English Lexicon of the New Testament. Click HERE
to see how to use the book. If you do not want to use the book, there is an online tool
to use for free. Click HERE for that tool.
4. Now, we know what the word means. Let's look at other verses in the New
Testament that use the same Greek word to get an idea of how God uses that word in
His communication to us and what other terms are used in translating that same Greek
term. This is where we really can get a good understanding of a term's meaning. We
can do this one of two ways. We can use a Word Study Concordance, like Tyndale's.
To see this being used, click HERE. Or, we can use the same free online tool as in point
three by just entering the Strong's number. Click HERE for that tool.
5. You should have come up with the following: Experiment (KJV): Strong’s number
1382; “dokimē”: “approved, tried character exhibited in the contribution” (Thayer’s Greek-
English Lexicon of the New Testament; page 154).
Other translations: “proof” (NKJV); “proving” (ASV 1901).
Tyndale’s Word Study Concordance shows “dokimē” in the following verses
(page 160): Romans 5:4 (experience; twice); II Corinthians 2:9 (proof); II
Corinthians 8:2 (trial); II Corinthians 13:3 (proof); Philippians 2:22 (proof).
6. Now use the information we've gathered from this good resources and grow deeper in
your understanding of God's word (II Peter 3:16-18)!
