I recently received the following in an email seeking to condemn me of teaching error:
angel. Sir, Satan was no angel. You're trying to portray Satan as a rebel angel and at the same time claim Satan is used by God to do his will. You want to have Satan play both roles in order to avoid a dilemma which exposes as false the standard Christian teaching that Satan is a ‘rebel’ angel. You need Satan to be both a rebel and a tool of God at the same time and it doesn't wash. Provide scriptural evidence that a character called Satan is a rebellious angel who defies God's authority.
encountered a talking serpent which is never identified anywhere in the Bible as Satan. Provide scriptures which show Satan disobeyed a command from God and was removed from Heaven. Your webpage says ‘Everything taught on this website is from the word of God. The Bible must be our sole source of authority if we want to please God (Colossians 3:17, II Timothy 1:13, II Timothy 3:16-17, I Peter 4:11, I John 2:3-6, and II John 9).’ So, where in the word of God did you get your ridiculous idea that God created Satan as an angel? Can’t you see that if God created Satan as an angel then God has created evil? I searched other websites of brethren and they deny what you teach: (http://www.the-churchofchrist.com/satan/was_the_devil_once_an_angel.htm).
You should stick to teaching things that are less controversial so others don’t get mislead” (email; 11/02/2007). I answered this person’s email with Scriptures, and remained brief. I knew the waste of time that was before me as I responded (II Timothy 2:23 and Titus 3:9). You see, this fellow was responding to an article that answered his question already (http://www.wordsoftruth.net/wordsoftruthbull06_18_2006.html). Some ask for Scriptures when they’ve already been provided because they are unwilling to accept the truth in the first place. First, in looking at the email I quoted above, the book this person referred to does not exist in the Bible. You see, it is the book of Revelation [singular] not Revelations, because it is one revelation which would shortly come to pass (Revelation 1:1- 3). Secondly, as was established in the article, the Bible shows us that Satan was an angel and has fallen from Heaven. This was my response to the question asked me: “And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment. And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day” (Luke 10:17-18, Revelation 12:7-9, II Peter 2:4, and Jude 6). The aforementioned Scriptures show us that Satan and his angels had freewill, sinned, and were punished. In fact, it is Hell that has been prepared for them (Matthew 25:41). Therefore, Satan does not play two roles. He played his own and has / will be punished for it! God did not create angels as sinners any more than He created man to sin (Ecclesiastes 7:29 and Ezekiel 28: 15). Finally, I do not need Satan to be a fallen “rebel” angel. All I need is what God tells me. Folks, what Satan was only matters as far as God tells us! We cannot defend something because it is a customary view. The book of Genesis reveals that it was a serpent that spoke with Eve. The book of Revelation tells us: “…that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan…” (Revelation 20:2; cf. Revelation 12:9). It was the serpent that beguiled Eve through his subtlety (II Corinthians 11:3). Eve was deceived in the book of Genesis (Genesis 3:1-7). Therefore, Satan is in the book of Genesis. In fact, we know that Satan has been killing since the beginning [definition of the term Genesis]: “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:44). Dear reader, the day a preacher of the Gospel of Christ begins to consult what others teach is the day he teaches the words of men. This is damnable (Colossians 2:8; 20-23). While others may teach the truth and it is not wrong to hear others teach the truth, we must study and stand upon what God says and that alone (Luke 4:4, I Corinthians 2:1-5, and II Timothy 4: 2). The word of God was sufficient to burn hearts in the days of Christ (Luke 24:32), Paul (Romans 1:16), and they are sufficient today also (Hebrews 4:12 and II Timothy 3:16-17). Furthermore, the website referenced as being from our brethren by the one emailing me, is full of error through the mindset of liberalism. I shall say, such material would never be a source of faithful brethren (II John 9-11). Satan was an angel of God. Now he is fallen. We must exercise caution, for his influence of deception has been since the beginning of time (I John 3:8). Let us not be ignorant of his devices (II Corinthians 2:11). His role is to blind our minds (II Corinthians 4:3-4). Let us not fall as he did (I Corinthians 10:12). |
