You’ve likely heard some woman at some time say something like “I wear the pants in this family”. This has become typical in the Rosanne Barr type of society we now live in. Talk shows employ loud mouth, over-the-top women like Rosie O’ Donnell because people have come to enjoy this type of behavior out of a woman. A non-Christian woman in Dover, DE who oversees part of the work of the church there through her husband (yes, you read that right) said: “I am not a Muslim woman, or Southern woman who is kicked around verbally…” (Heather Hampton; August 2nd, 2007). You know what that means, right? She is telling whoever will listen that she believes that she is a man who’ll stand for what she believes in and no one will shut her mouth at any time. Solomon said: “It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house… It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.” (Proverbs 21: 9; 19). When Paul is talking about the long hair a woman is to have for a covering (I Corinthians 11:15), he reminds us of those roles: “But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God… For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man” (I Corinthians 11:3; 8-9). When a woman reads such Scriptures and she blows up like a gasoline can with a match dropped inside, you know she is not willing to live according to God’s rules. When a man sees those Scriptures and tries to find some loophole of being the head of the home, church, etc. he is denying the clear instructions of God. As plain as inspiration lays out God’s instructions, we have to wonder why some just cannot see what God has said. Is God too vague in the instructions of the roles for men and women? Did He just not say enough for some people? Do the 21st century customs of our worldly culture overrule God? Let’s answer those questions. For the home, God says this: “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing… Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement” (Ephesians 5:22-24 and I Peter 3:1-6). For the church, God says this: “Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church” (I Corinthians 14:34-35). In teaching and authority anywhere, God says this: “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence” (I Timothy 2:11-12). For leadership in the local church, God says this: “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work… And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also” (I Timothy 3:1 and II Timothy 2:2). God’s clear on the roles of men and women and He’s said plenty that governs us for all time (Hebrews 4:12; cf. John 12:48)! Isn’t it funny that baptism is required as part of what you must do to be saved for all time because God says so (Mark 16:15- 16, Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16, and Romans 6:3-6), but the roles of men and women change because of customs? This is simple to answer just by using the word of God: “Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (Touch not; taste not; handle not;Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh” (Colossians 2:20- 23). Our customs do not change God’s word (Mark 7:1-9)! Sure, an article like this has those of us who will write them quickly labeled as male pigs or male chauvinists. Lest anyone miss the point, this article is just from what God says. So, if someone wants to label a male as a pig, I suggest you look above and go for it. While some of those females who have that attitude want to complain about “equal rights and authority”, complain to God about why there are no females in Heaven right now (I John 5:7). Woman can be great to help man as she was created to do (Genesis 2:20). However, when she steps into the pants of a man all things get out of order. Worse than that is, men allow them to do it. Some fellows just need to learn to act like men (I Corinthians 16:13). If that makes me sound like a “caveman”, I’ll enjoy the company of other “cavemen” like Paul, Jesus, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit! One of the saddest verses relative to men and women in the Bible, in my estimation, is this passage that serves as our conclusion: “And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her” (Ecclesiastes 7:26). |
