Today ~ Tomorrow ~ Eternity
By: Brian A. Yeager

While sitting and looking at my calendar of things to do I began to wonder why we as human beings place so much emphasis on tomorrow, and less emphasis on “today”.  Stores sell daily planners at a high rate.  New handheld computers with planners built right into them are sold in just about every department store now.  The emphasis of all this thinking is about planning on tomorrow.  Sometimes in daily thought I dismiss the current day because tomorrow is fast approaching and there is much to do then.  Yet, what are we neglecting today when we focus so much on tomorrow?

Today

Today is short.  When most people awake out of their sleep they are already several hours into today.  There is much to do.  Speaking about spiritual things; today could be the last day you have to prepare.  Today could be the day the Lord will come (Matthew 24:42).  Life is short.  (James 4:13-14) “Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”  So, what are you plans for tomorrow?

Tomorrow

Today is passing and tomorrow is coming.  Well, maybe.  Tomorrow is not promised.  Today is already here.  (Proverbs 27:1) “Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”  One thing that we can know for sure is that we are on earth to serve God every day, with all our hearts, minds, and souls (Matthew 22:37).  Tomorrow in the sense of a 24 hour day may never come to be.  However, we are assured that time will not just stop.  We are assured that we are living life looking forward to something beyond the next 24 hour day on earth.  We are living here, to exist in eternity.  So, today may be here, tomorrow may not come, however eternity is something we can plan on!

Eternity

A child of God spends their whole life on earth looking forward to the place of no pain, no tears, no sorrows, etc. which is Heaven (Revelation 21:3-7).  The faithful child of God looks forward to a promised home that is eternal in the Heavens (II Corinthians 5:1).  So, the faithful child of God realizes that today and tomorrow must be days of preparation to meet our God.  Days spent to assure that our deeds here on earth will be pleasing to Him.  These days are days in which we live in attempt to live faithfully before we die (Revelation 2:10).  The faithful child of God lives his or her life expecting tomorrow to be the first day of eternity in Heaven.

Conclusion

Today is here, tomorrow may never be, so ask yourself where will you spend your eternity.  The faithful child of God will hear the words: “Well done, good and faithful servant…enter thou into the joy of thy lord – Matthew 25:23.”  While the child of the devil, the disobedient to God, the unfaithful will hear: “…Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels – Matthew 25:41.”  Live today and tomorrow with the mindset of looking forward to spending an eternity with God in Heaven.  Do not live today and tomorrow in fear of being delivered into Hell.  Today may just be the last day you have to think about these things!

What must one do to be saved (Acts 2:37)?  Hear and believe the Gospel (Mark 16:15-16), repent of their sins (Acts 3:19), confess Christ (Acts 8:37), and be baptized (immersed) for the remission of sins into the church (Acts 2:38, I Corinthians 12:12-13, and Galatians 6:3-5).  One must then remain faithful (Revelation 2:10).
