What Does God Think About Liars?
By: Brian A. Yeager

One of the things I hate most is lying.  I am certainly glad to serve a God who feels the same way.  The Lord declares in the clearest of terms how He feels about liars: (Proverbs 6:16-19) “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”  With the clear words of the Lord, anyone who professes to be a Christian would always be a people of truth.  However, that is not always the case.  A lie is simply the opposite of truth.  When we fail in telling the truth even in the slightest way we have become liars.  There is no such thing as a “little white lie”.  Those who would deny that might reference the “little white lie” the serpent told Eve in the Garden wherein he simply added one word [not] to a sentence that made it a lie (Genesis 3:1ff.)  The Bible teaches that truth and lies are the difference between whose children we are.

Whose Child Are You?

(John 8:44) "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”  When someone lies they take that attribute from the father of lies, which is Satan.  That makes them a child of Satan.

When Christians obey the Gospel of Christ they are delivered from the power of darkness (Colossians 1:13).  Christians are to stop practicing that which is evil and worldly (Romans 12:1-2 and I John 2:15-17).  Christians are supposed to be honest and trustworthy representatives of that which is godly (Matthew 5:14-16 and Galatians 5:22-25).  Christians, who are led by the Holy Spirit through the word of God, are God’s children (Romans 8:14-17).  Therefore, that means we are a people of light, truth, honesty, and good works.  God tells Christians not to lie: (Colossians 3:9) Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.”   Our actions are a testimony of who it is we truly belong to (Titus 1:16).  If we belong to Satan because we are liars then there will be an eternal price to pay!

The Punishment That Awaits Liars

(Revelation 21:8) “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”  God’s view on liars is certainly settled when He has already declared their judgment.  Our God of truth hates lies.  He treats those who would tell them accordingly.  If someone wants to go to Heaven they need to realize telling lies will keep them from eternal life with God the Father.

Conclusion

God does not lie (Titus 1:2 and Hebrews 6:18).  Godly people should aim to be like God in all of His revealed attributes.  If we are a people who love truth, we will naturally hate lies.  Thus, we will not associate with those things that are not true, because lies are in opposition to the very nature of God.  Liars are not walking with God they are walking in opposition to Him.  Christians are to be a people of light, not a people of darkness:  (I John 1:5-6) “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.  If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth.”

What must one do to be saved (Acts 2:37)?  Hear and believe the Gospel (Mark 16:15-16), repent of their sins (Acts 3:19), confess Christ (Acts 8:37), and be baptized (immersed) for the remission of sins into the church (Acts 2:38, I Corinthians 12:12-13, and Galatians 6:3-5).  One must then remain faithful (Revelation 2:10).
