The Middle Verse of the Bible
By: Brian A. Yeager

It has been stated many times that the middle chapter of the Bible is Psalms chapter 118.  Along with that statistic it has been stated that the middle verse would be Psalms 118:8.  I have not sat down and counted the verses and chapters of the Bible to see if that were a fact.  It is man who divided the Bible into chapters not God.  Yet, after thinking about the fact that I had heard this to be a fact, I looked at this verse on more time.  I find it very interesting if it is indeed the middle verse of the Bible, but even if it is not this verse surely is powerful.  Notice what it says: (Psalms 118:8) “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.”  Regardless of the placement of this verse, it is one thought that God has displayed throughout the inspired pages of the Bible (Acts 5:29, I Corinthians 2:12-13, Galatians 1:6-12, and Colossians 2:4-8).  No one will get to Heaven because of what men have to say unless men are proclaiming that which God has already stated.  We will be judged based upon what God’s word says not what man has to say.

We Are Held Accountable to Obey the Word of God

(John 12:48) “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.”  To hear the word of God and not receive it is sure spiritual condemnation.  Receiving the message of
the Gospel of Christ infers that one will be pricked in their hearts and obey that message (Acts 2:37-41).   It is also interesting to note that Christ equates one who will not receive the word as one who has rejected Him.  God, our Father in Heaven, requires us to hear, receive, and do that which Christ declared:

Matthew 17:1-5 “And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.  And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.  Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.  While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.”
For someone to think for a moment that they can get to Heaven without obeying strictly that which God has declared shows that they have never sought out what God had to say on the matter.  God supplied us with His complete record so that we could know what to do to please Him (II Timothy 3:16-17 and II Peter 1:3).  No Government has ever declared a law that the people where not expected to follow.  Why do people today think any differently about the Law of the Lord than they do the Law of the Land?  It is not logical to assume a law exists in which we are not required to follow.  Such flawed human reasoning will lead a multitude into destruction (Proverbs 14:12).

Conclusion

Since God has taken the time to declare a law we should take the time to study and understand that law (II Timothy 2:15).  We cannot assume that it is too difficult, for God declared to us that we can read and understand His word (Ephesians 3:1-4).  Let us seek to build our faith upon the Rock Jesus Christ, that our faith might be able to withstand the storms of life (Matthew 7:24-27).  It is Satan who wants us to think that we do not have to follow the word of God.  Let’s refuse to be fooled by laziness and human logic, but let us all submit to He who is greater and higher than us and our wisdom.  We shall obey God and His word and from that be eternally blessed (Matthew 7:21)!

What must one do to be saved (Acts 2:37)?  Hear and believe the Gospel (Mark 16:15-16), repent of their sins (Acts 3:19), confess Christ (Acts 8:37), and be baptized (immersed) for the remission of sins into the church (Acts 2:38, I Corinthians 12:12-13, and Galatians 6:3-5).  One must then remain faithful (Revelation 2:10).
