A Thought to Consider…

A well-known liberal writer, who has done much harm to the body of Christ, has written something that resembles a local false concept here in the El Paso area that has recently popped up.  F. Lagard Smith is a mover of heresy.  He has written a book (one of many books he has written which are all full of error) titled “Radical Restoration”.  The main thrust is to try and change the identity of the Lord’s church.  In this book he has pushed the House Church Movement into the eyes of his reader.  At one point he writes: “There is nothing to rule out the possibility that the role of elders in the early church might well have encompassed more than one level of involvement—even simultaneously.  Perhaps there were elders shepherding the disciples in each house, depending upon their size and makeup.  And perhaps elder oversight may have been exercised throughout a group of house churches which collectively comprised a larger, recognizable congregation” (p. 178).

A local congregation does not assemble into multiple smaller groups.  Such would be division and would be the formation of multiple congregations.  The local church is to assemble together in one place (I Corinthians 11:20; 14:23).  All of the members are to assemble together (Hebrews 10:25).  To fail in such is to forsake the assembling of the saints.

A local congregation that has an eldership cannot have that eldership overseeing multiple groups.  Every congregation is to have her own elders who feed, protect, and oversee the flock that is among them (Acts 14:23, Acts 20:28, and I Peter 5:1-3).  A divided congregation cannot function under these principles of truth.  A local body is to work together (Ephesians 4:16).  Dividing the local congregation is like cutting your own physical body parts and trying to live and function in said state (I Corinthians 12:18-27).

The idea of small groups and divided local congregation is an attempt to further the cause of error.  While such has no authority from the Lord, it also gives Satan an easier group of targets.  Together, the local body acts in a united way and each of the stronger members are there to protect those that may be less mature (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10).  False teachers love it when the sheep are in smaller groups and the watchmen have their faces turned the other direction.  The idea of the small groups and the house churches presents an all you can eat buffet for the devil and his angels.

Smaller groups allows for many doctrines to creep in.  Instead of one practice there is room for many.  If it were possible for one congregation to exist in several divided parts, that one congregation would soon find a division separate from just location.  Those with agendas would have plenty of opportunity to convert just a few at a time.  Let’s be watchful against this idea and the opportunities to cause souls to be lost that it presents (cf. Acts 20:31).  – B.A.Y.

Chapter Eight

Introduction Thoughts:

Chapter six concluded with the opening of the sixth seal and the question: “who shall be able to stand?”  Chapter seven answered that question by pointing out that the faithful shall be able to stand through God’s protection.  The stand would be of those who made it through the great tribulation the Roman government put Christians through.  The hope was in Christ with eternity being the reward (Matthew 5:10-12).  Now we begin chapter eight with the opening of the seventh seal which will introduce unto us the seven trumpets.  The seven seals were the revealing of the message, the trumpets are the warning, and the seven bowls of wrath will be God pouring out His judgment upon the earth.

8:1 “And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.”

8:2 “And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.” 8:3 “And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. 8:4 And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.” 8:5 “And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.”  8:6 “And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.” 8:7 “The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.” 8:8 “And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood. 8:9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.” 8:10 “And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters.  8:11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.” 8:12 “And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.” 8:13 “And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!” Studies in Revelation Continued in Next Week’s Bulletin…

What must one do to be saved (Acts 2:37)?  Hear and believe the Gospel (Mark 16:15-16), repent of their sins (Acts 3:19), confess Christ (Acts 8:37), and be baptized (immersed) for the remission of sins into the church (Acts 2:38, I Corinthians 12:12-13, and Romans 6:3-5).  One must then remain faithful (Revelation 2:10).
