This Lord’s Day I am currently preaching a Gospel Meeting in Alliance, OH. In my place some of the brethren here have taken the responsibility of preaching the word of God. They have spent numerous hours in study and preparation. For their time and effort we should all be very grateful. The men preaching and teaching in my place this week have taken on a great responsibility. They have to preach the word of God and nothing but the word of God (II Timothy 4:2). They have to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). They are held to the high standard of not misleading those who are listening to them preach. Teaching is a great responsibility not to be taken lightly (James 3:1). The men preaching have the blood on their hands if they fail in declaring that which needs to be taught (Ezekiel 3:18 and Acts 20:26-27). They know this fact and thus have focused on preparing that which needs taught. In response, you have some responsibilities as a hearer of what is being taught.
Hear and Do
James so appropriately said that we must not just be hearers of the word of God but doers also (James 1:21-25). We cannot just hear what is said and take no action. The word of God is meant to produce action (Hebrews 4:12). The primary responsibility of those hearing the Gospel preached is to make the appropriate adjustments in their lives to fit what Christ demands of us. The hearer needs to listen to have the faith increased (Romans 10:17). Will you listen attentively?
Hear and Examine
As Christians who are listening to a Gospel message the hearer must also examine the things taught whether they be of God (Acts 17:10-11 and I John 4:1). The responsibility of the speaker is to prove that which he is declaring to be the truth (I Thessalonians 5:21). If those in the audience hear error they have the responsibility to challenge that error and stand for the truth (Jude 3). It is a responsibility of each Christian to be able to answer bible questions (I Peter 3:15).
Conclusion
The local church in Butler needs to be thankful that we have men who are willing and able to declare the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We need to encourage these men to continue in what they are doing. It is certainly a relief for me to be able to know that truth will be taught in my absence. Not many preachers can leave the congregations in which they labor with the confidence that I am able to have. To God be the glory for the blessings we have in able men and good listeners!
P.S. – I will be missing you
all very much and will be ever so excited to return to my role. Please
pray for my efforts with the meeting in Alliance, OH and my safe return.
