Introduction:

A. As human beings we too often allow emotion, pride, anger, etc. to cloud our judgment:

1. Proverbs 28:26
2. Proverbs 16:18
3. Ecclesiastes 7:9

B. Righteous judgment does not come from seeking our own will: John 5:30

1. To have proper judgment you must take counsel from the Lord: Psalms 1:1-2
2. Proper judgment is not based upon appearance: John 7:24
3. You can judge properly by knowing what is right from what is wrong: Hebrews 5:14

C. A Christian is to be “just” [observant of rule; what is right] and think on things that are just: Philippians 4:8

1. If we are just we will be blessed: Proverbs 3:33
2. If we are just we will be examples: Proverbs 4:18
3. If we are just we will be able to increase in learning: Proverbs 9:9
4. If we are just we will live by the rule of faith: Romans 1:17

I. If We Seek the Lord’s Will - We Will Have to Be Just Judges of Ourselves

A. We are too often able to judge others, while not able to judge ourselves:

1. Matthew 7:1-5
2. Romans 2:1-3

B. Seeking the Lord requires us to be honest with ourselves:

1. Psalms 119:59
2. Lamentations 3:40
3. We need to have honest and good hearts: Luke 8:15

II. If We Seek the Lord’s Will - We Will be Just Judges of Others

A. We will never be respecters of persons:

1. Proverbs 24:23
2. It is evil to have respect of persons: James 2:1-9
3. Think of this passage especially as it relates to brethren: Galatians 3:26-28

B. We will never have personal agendas against someone else or hold grudges:

1. Matthew 5:43-48
2. Romans 12:17-21
3. When one repents we will forgive: Luke 17:3-4

C. We will look to one’s works and the fruit of those works:

1. Matthew 7:20
2. Titus 2:7-8

III. If We Seek the Lord’s Will - We Will Use Proper Judgment of What to Do When Confronted by Sin

A. Every appearance [form] of evil is to be abstained [held back] from (I Thessalonians 5:22).

1. Evil companions: I Corinthians 15:33
2. Why would we want to be with evil: II Corinthians 6:14-17
3. No fellowship with works of darkness: Ephesians 5:11

B. Romans 12:9 “…Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.”

1. The word abhor – “apostugeo” means “to dislike, abhor, have a horror of” –Thayer.
2. The word evil - “poneros” means “bad, of a bad nature or condition; in a physical sense: diseased or blind; in an ethical sense: evil wicked, bad.” –Thayer.
3. The messages of the Bible is a resounding “abhor that which is evil”:

a. Deuteronomy 7:26
b. Psalms 97:10
c. Psalms 101:3
d. Amos 5:14-15

4. We are to be a people walking in good works: Ephesians 2:10

Conclusion:

A. Proper judgment is a broad subject.  To have such however, is simple:

1. Proverbs 3:5-6
2. Proverbs 16:9

B. When we allow emotion, history, anger, etc. to cloud our judgment, we must be willing to acknowledge that and change it.
