Another Sermon Outline by Brian A. Yeager
Turning a Blind Eye
I. Introduction: Leviticus 20:1-5
    A. Why do we hide / ignore our or other’s sins (Isaiah 40:27-28)?
    1. Maybe it’s to continue fellowship with evil (Ephesians 5:11 and II
    Corinthians 6:14-18).
    2. Maybe it’s to avoid confrontation (I Kings 18:20-21).
    3. Maybe it’s because you don’t care (Matthew 24:12).
    4. Maybe because of shame and fear (Genesis 3:8-10; cf. Job 31:33).
    B. Do we realize that we cannot hide anything from God (Jeremiah 23:23-24)?
    1. There’s no place to hide from God (Job 34:21-22, Isaiah 29:15-16,
    and I John 3:18-21).
    2. Even every thought that enters your mind (Ezekiel 11:5; cf. Psalms 94:
    4-11).

II. Body: Some congregations turn a blind eye to sin (Revelation 2:14-16; 2:20-23,
etc.)
    A. The ignorant church of “don’t ask / don’t tell” (Proverbs 18:5 and II
    Corinthians 10:18).
    1. We must ask (Isaiah 8:20, Matthew 24:4-5, Acts 20:28-31, I
    Corinthians 15:33, II Corinthians 11:12-15, and I John 4:1).
    2. Those asked must tell [give a defense] (I Corinthians 9:1-3,
    Colossians 4:6, I Peter 3:15).
    3. “Oh, but ‘John’ living with a woman violating Hebrews 13:4 or
    Matthew 26:41 is his business.”  Really… (I Corinthians 5:1-6)?
    B. The ignorant church of “we’ll just let it go, we don’t want to offend anyone”
    (Matthew 13:54-58).
    1. We cannot let sin go (Proverbs 28:4, Isaiah 56:10, Luke 17:3-4, and I
    Timothy 5:20).
    2. Do we want to justify sin (Proverbs 17:15)?
    C. The church of “we’ll find a way to keep others from finding out” (Proverbs
    28:13).
    1. We are more transparent than we think (Matthew 7:16-20; 12:33-35).
    2. Even those hidden now will be found later (I Timothy 5:24-25).

III. Conclusion:
    A. Hiding sin should tear us up and bring change (Psalms 32:1-5).
    B. Don’t dismiss your sins (Acts 24:25).
    C. You’ll answer even for your secrets (Ecclesiastes 12:14)!
