I. Introduction: “The Sky Is Falling, also known as Chicken Licken, Chicken Little
or Henny Penny is an old fable about a chicken (or a hare in early versions) who
believes the sky is falling. The phrase has also become used to indicate a
hysterical or mistaken belief that disaster is imminent” (Wikipedia).
A. Many think constantly preaching warnings makes one an alarmists [one
who overstates danger] and that affects us (Jeremiah 20:7-10).
1. Those who’ll mock the preaching of truth will continue (Jude 17-19).
2. Some have a point of truth that is “too far” to hear (John 6:52-66, Acts
17:30-32, and Acts 22:6-22).
B. Some won’t take warnings seriously (Zephaniah 1:12-18; cf. Leviticus 26:
27-33).
1. The price is paid for ignoring warnings (Jeremiah 25:4-9).
2. Careful people prepare when warned (Proverbs 22:3 and Ezekiel 33:
1-9).
II. Body: Folks, there’s a lot to warn about (Colossians 1:26-29).
A. How would Jesus be perceived by “brethren” today (John 8:37-59)?
1. Jesus preached about the few faithful, was He an alarmist (Matthew
22:1-14 and Luke 18:7-8)?
2. Jesus preached about false teachers, was He an alarmist (Mark 13:
22-23)?
3. Jesus preached about worldliness, was He an alarmist (Mark 4:18-
19 and John 3:19-21)?
4. Jesus taught His followers not to be of the world, was He an alarmist
(John 15:18-19 and John 17:14)?
5. Jesus taught against hypocrisy, was He an alarmist (Luke 12:1)?
6. Jesus taught on “issues”, was He an alarmist (Luke 16:18, John 17:
20-23; 26; I John 1:3, Luke 17:3-4, Matthew 18:15-17, etc.).
7. Jesus preached about the disobedient going to Hell, was He an
alarmist (Matthew 25:41; 46 and Mark 9:43-48).
8. Jesus stood hard for the truth with plain speech, was He an alarmist
(Matthew chapters 21-23).
9. Jesus demanded complete obedience and perfection, was He an
alarmist (Matthew 5:48 and Luke 6:46).
10. Jesus taught to be aware, was He an alarmist (Matthew 26:41).
B. The beloved Apostles, how would they be perceived today (Galatians 4:
16)?
1. If Paul were to write what he wrote to churches in the first century, they’
d call him an alarmist (I Corinthians 11:17ff., Colossians 2:8, Galatians
3:1, Galatians 5:7-9, II Thessalonians 1:7-9, and II Thessalonians 3:1-6).
2. Paul would be perceived as paranoid today (II Corinthians 9:2-3,
Philippians 2:19, and I Thessalonians 3:1-5).
3. Peter and Paul would be perceived as being too worried about false
teachers (Colossians 2:8, I Timothy 1:3-4, and II Peter chapter 2).
4. Paul would be labeled a meddler or gossiper (Romans 16:17-18 and
I Corinthians 1:11).
C. Where’s our anger towards what we see among “brethren” (Jeremiah 6:10-
11)?
1. Why do some “brethren” call religious frauds “friends” and
“neighbors” (Philippians 3:17-19)?
2. Folks, the sky is falling in the “brotherhood” (II Timothy 3:13).
3. It’s time to be Chicken Little’s rather than little chickens (Jeremiah 5:
11-14 and I Corinthians 16:13).
III. Conclusion:
A. Let’s not run and hide, but rejoice in the few who will stand with us also
being called alarmists (I Kings 19:1-18).
B. The remnant must take the right actions (II Kings 19:30).
