Common Symptoms of Unfaithfulness

Introduction:

A. Sin is noticed at times by the symptoms it presents:
1. Denial: Genesis 4:9
2. What comes out of the mouth shows an evil heart: Matthew 12:34-35
3. Guilt: Matthew 21:33-46
4. Defensiveness shows sinfulness: Luke 10:25-29
5. Those who only love themselves are shown by many characteristics: II Timothy 3:1-5
B. Jesus referred to himself as a physician: Matthew 9:11-12
C. Sin is a disease that will kill us:
1. Ezekiel 18:4
2. James 1:14-15
3. Since sin is a spiritually fatal disease we must beware of some of the symptoms and allow the remedy the physician has prescribed to work (Romans 1:16).


I. The Symptom of Forgetfulness

A. Forgetting to pray:
1. Jesus began the parable of the Unjust Judge saying: Luke 18:1
2. In talking about His return Jesus said: Luke 21:36
B. Forgetting to study [eat]:
1. Without study you’ll sin: Psalms 119:11
2. God’s word makes us alive, what are you without study?  John 6:63; cf. Psalms 119:93
C. Forgetting who you are as a Christian:
1. You are the Lord’s: Romans 14:8
2. One that does not give place [a foothold] to the devil: Ephesians 4:27
3. A follower of God: Ephesians 5:1
4. A light to the world: Philippians 2:15
5. Servants who love God: I John 5:3
D. Forgetting your goals as a Christian:
1. Live your life unto the Lord: II Corinthians 5:15
2. Living life here in preparation for the Judgment Day: I Thessalonians 5:1-6


II. The Symptom of Carelessness [not caring, free from care]

A. Not caring to mature and grow as a Christian:
1. Do we want to be destroyed for willful ignorance:
a. Isaiah 5:13
b. Hosea 4:6
2. We are careless if we don’t want to be known as Christians that are growing: II Thessalonians 1:3
3. II Peter 1:3-12
B. Not caring about your brethren:
1. We are to love one another as Jesus loves us: John 15:12
2. Romans 12:10
3. Intense love for one another: I Peter 1:22
4. I John 3:14-18
C. Not caring about what you say: Proverbs 21:23
1. The words of a busybody:
a. I Timothy 5:11-14
b. I Peter 4:15
c. II Thessalonians 3:11
2. Words of dishonesty: Colossians 3:9
3. Foul language: Ephesians 4:29


III. The Symptom of Fatigue

A. Tired of working:
1. Hebrews 4:11
2. I Corinthians 15:58
B. Tired of “hearing it”:
1. Too long: Nehemiah 8:3
2. Too much: Nehemiah 9:3
3. Too negative: 2/3 of preaching is, II Timothy 4:2
4. When we want it smooth that is the symptom of a rebellious people: Isaiah 30:9-11
C. Tired of giving it your all:
1. Just going through the motions: Mark 12:30
2. Luke 9:62


Conclusion:

A. When we notice the symptoms of unfaithfulness, we must see to the cure: Psalms 119:9
B. If the symptoms of unfaithfulness are ignored, we will die in our sins: Ezekiel 33:18
