Some Thoughts on Love

Introduction:

A. Love: “love” found 311 times in 281 verses.  Charity 28 times in 24 verses.
1. Agape (26): “brotherly love, affection, good will, love, benevolence” 117 times in the KJV New Testament as (love 86, charity 27, dear 1, charitably+2596 1,feast of charity 1).
2. agapao? (25): “of persons - to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly; of things - to be well pleased, to be contented at or with a thing.”  142 times in the KJV New Testament as love 135, beloved 7.
3. Philadelphia (5360): “love of brothers or sisters, brotherly love” 6 times in the KJV New Testament as brotherly love 3, brotherly kindness 2, love of brethren 1.
4. Phileo (5368): “to love, show signs of love, to be fond of doing” 25 times in the KJV New Testament as love 22, kiss 3.
5. Also, about 4 other Greek terms for love in N.T.
B. Love is not merely an emotion:
1. God’s love to us is SHOWN: I John 4:9-10
2. Our love to one another is SHOWN: I John 3:14-18
3. Our love for God is SHOWN: John 14:15
I. God’s Love Toward Us
A. The love of God towards is displayed in His sacrificing His only begotten Son:
1. John 3:16; cf. John 1:29

3. Ephesians 2:4-5 – Cf. Romans 6:1-6; Acts 2:38
4. Titus 2:11-14

B. The special love of God towards Christians is displayed through His providence:

II. Our Love For God
A. Our love for God is shown through obedience:
1. John 14:21
2. John 14:23

B. If we don’t love God…
1. We are not know of Him: I Corinthians 8:3
2. We are cursed; literally “May our Lord swiftly execute His Judgments”: I Corinthians 16:22
III. We Ought to Love One Another
A. Brethren should love one another: John 13:34-35; John 15:17
1.  You can’t love God and not your brethren I John 4:18-21
2.  We are to have unfeigned (sincere) love one to another: I Peter 1:22
3.  We are taught of God to love one another: I Thessalonians 4:9
4.  Christian love is summed up by the inspired Apostle John (I John 3:14-18).

IV. Some Things We Ought Not to Love
A. The word of God has a wonderful definition of love in a chapter dealing with the cessation of spiritual gifts (I Corinthians 13:1-7).
1. Love does not think evil (v. 5).
2. Love does not rejoice in iniquity (v. 6).
3. Therefore, since love does not rejoice in evil, love cannot tolerate evil!

B. Love of the world - John 3:19-20
1. John 15:18-19
2. James 4:4
3. The things of the world: I John 2:15-17
C. Love of self:
1. II Timothy 3:1-7
2. One who is in love with himself will not deny himself: Matthew 16:24
Conclusion:
A. A parent may hear “you don’t love me anymore” when they act as a parent.
1. God hears that to when people do not get what they want.
2. Yet, it is God who granted life to begin with (Genesis 1-2).
B. The proper application of love may not make one so popular:
1. Proverbs 27:5
2. Revelation 3:19
