Another Outline from Brian A. Yeager

Some Things We Ought to Always Do as Christians

Introduction:
A. We live in the “post-it” note generation wherein we need constant reminders of what we must do:
1. Lists of things we need, places to go, things to do, etc.
2. We should also be reminded of our responsibilities towards the Lord: II Peter 1:2-15
3. Remember so that we will be mindful of those things we need to do: II Peter 3:1-2
B. The danger comes when we stop reminding ourselves of what we must do leading us to forgetting those things:
1. Proverbs 3:1-2
2. Proverbs 4:5
I. Always Obey
A. We can learn from Jesus to always obey: John 8:29
1. John 4:35
2. John 15:10
3. John 17:4
B. Notice what Paul was able to say about the brethren in Philippi: Philippians 2:12
1. Why were these brethren always obedient: Philippians 2:13
2. Was it easy for them?  NO: Philippians 1:29-30; 2:14-16
3. These were brethren that Paul was thankful for who would be useful to the Lord: Philippians 1:3-6
4. How would they continue to obey?  Philippians 4:9
II. Always Pray
A. Jesus said: (Parable of the Unjust Judge) Luke 18:1
1. Luke 21:36
2. I Thessalonians 5:17
B. Look to Jesus as the example for frequent praying:
1. Matthew 26:36
2. Mark 1:35
3. Luke 5:15-16
4. John 17
C. Look to the word of God to find out how and what to pray for:
1. To the Father through the Son: Colossians 3:17 and I Timothy 2:5
2. Use prayer as a relief of anxiety: Philippians 4:6
3. In humility: Luke 18:10-14
4. For things you need: Matthew 6:9-13
5. For your brethren: Romans 1:9, I Corinthians 1:4, Philippians 1:4, Colossians 1:3, I Thessalonians 1:12, and Philemon v.4.
6. To give thanks: I Thessalonians 5:18
III. Always Have a Clear Conscience
A. The conscience is: “the sense of the moral goodness or blameworthiness of one's own conduct, intentions, or character together with a feeling of obligation to do right or be good” (Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary; 4th Edition).
1. There are those who have weak consciences: I Corinthians 8:12
2. Having a good conscience, strong in the faith, will help us to live honorably: Hebrews 13:18
B. Use Paul as an example:
1. Acts 23:1
2. Acts 24:15-16
Conclusion:
A. To be ready to meet the Lord is to be prepared knowing and doing the things we always should be doing:
1. II Corinthians 5:8-10
2. II Peter 3:14
B. Tonight we will contrast this lesson with things we should never do: SEE THAT LESSON HERE
