I. Introduction:
    A. As we’ve previously discussed, the O.T. was one Law, but Christ
came bringing another Law (Hebrews 8:7-13; 12:24).
    B. We’ve also discussed how Jesus’ authority supersedes Moses’
authority (Matthew 11:27 and John 5:17-24).

II. Body: Matthew 5:33-37
Verse 33: Under the Old Law swearing /oaths were acceptable, if kept
    (Deuteronomy 6:13; 10:20, Exodus 22:10-13, Numbers 30:2, Psalms 50:
    14-15, Psalms 66:13-14, and Ecclesiastes 5:4-6).
Verses 34-36: Jesus gives a New Law (Mark 14:24 and Hebrews 9:15),
NO swearing now at all (James 5:12).
    •        Realize what swearing by Heaven is (Matthew 23:16-22; cf.
    Hebrews 6:16).
    •        Swearing by the earth being His footstool (Acts 7:48-49).
    •        Not by Jerusalem for the King’s throne (Psalms 48:1-2).
    •        Nor by the human head (Luke 12:6-7; cf. I Corinthians 6:20).
    •        The point of the above, though we are not permitted to swear
at all now, the things people swear upon do not even belong to
their or are not under their authority (Psalms 83:18, Psalms 89:11,
    Ezekiel 18:4, and Ephesians 4:6).
Verse 37: Either be a “yes” or “no” people, anything else is evil.
    •        Basically, is your word good enough; a question of honesty
    (Proverbs 12:17-19, Proverbs 13:5, Romans 12:17, Romans 13:13,
II Corinthians 13:7-8, Ephesians 4:22-25, Colossians 3:9, Hebrews
    13:18, and I Peter 2:12).
    •        What is the biblical view of liars (Psalms 5:6, Psalms 101:7,
    Proverbs 6:16-19, Proverbs 12:22, Proverbs 17:4, John 8:44, Acts
    5:1-10, and Revelation 21:8).

III. Conclusion: Acts 24:16 and II Corinthians 8:21
