I. Introduction:
    A. Our Lord, in this context, will establish the importance of spiritual
investment over the idea of earthly wealth (Luke 18:18-23).
    B. Consider some of the cautions in God’s word about earthly wealth
    (Psalms 62:10, Ecclesiastes 5:10-11; 13-16, and I Timothy 6:9-11).
    1. We are not supposed to be worldly minded (Romans 12:1-2,
    Philippians 2:5-9, and I Peter 2:11).
    2. If the Lord has our whole heart, no more room exist for the love
of riches (Deuteronomy 6:5 and Luke 10:25-28).

II. Body: Matthew 6:19-23
Verse 19-20: Where do you invest (Luke 12:32-38)?
    •        It’s not that everyone has to sell everything (Acts 16:40 and
    Romans 16:3-5; cf. I Timothy 5:8).
o        Some should set aside things if they become
    materialistic (Hebrews 12:1-2).
    •        Riches do what (Psalms 49:6-13, Proverbs 11:28, Proverbs
    27:24, and James 5:1-6)?
    •        Invest in eternity with all the resources that we have (Luke 5:
    1-11 and Hebrews 11:24-26; cf. I Timothy 6:17-19).
Verses 21: The real treasure (Proverbs 8:13-21, Acts 20:32, Romans 11:
33-36, Ephesians 2:7 and Colossians 1:12), needs to be where our
hearts are (Isaiah 55:1-3, John 6:32-35, Philippians 3:20-21, and
    Colossians 3:1-4).
Verses 22-23: These two passages that further explain verse 21.  Where
we focus will determine our actions, goals, etc. (Deuteronomy 32:46-47,
    Ezra 7:10, Psalms 19:7-11, Psalms 84:2; 119:2, and Jeremiah 29:13).
    •        We’ll continue this point in our next lesson (cf. Matthew 6:33).

III. Conclusion: Let’s focus on the things that matter rather than stressing
over wealth (Matthew 16:24-26).
