I. Introduction:
    A. We have the privilege to be able to see the personal teachings of
Christ (John 6:66-68; cf. Matthew 12:42).
    1. We understand the whole N.T. is His teachings (Hebrews 1:1-2,
    John 12:48, John 16:13-15, Matthew 26:28, and Hebrews 9:15-18).
    a. We understand the N.T. truths, which were not temporary
(cf. Romans 1:11; Acts 1:16-26 and Acts 2:1-4; 10:44-48), are
bound upon all mankind in entirety (John 12:48 and Mark 16:
    15-16).
    b. This is a time when Jesus sees the multitudes and gives a
lesson to His disciples in personal teaching, which yes
applies to us, but also has intimate meaning as well (cf.
    Matthew 9:36-38).
    2. We can learn not just His words, but how teach them too (Mark
    1:21-22 and Luke 19:47-48).
    3. He is the best who ever taught (Matthew 12:39-42, John 3:2; 8:
    28, and Acts 3:22-23).
    4. Consider how high our interest level ought to be (Luke 5:1; cf.
    Mark 12:35-37).
    B. Do we want to be blessed (Psalms 1:1-6, Ephesians 1:3 and
    Proverbs 8:32; 28:20)?
    1. It’s either blessed or cursed (Proverbs 3:33).
    2. As a familiar point, how shall we inherit blessings (Luke 11:28
    and Revelation 1:3)?

II. Body: Matthew 5:1-2; The “Beatitudes” [a state of utmost bliss].  The
Lord’s people ought to be happy (Psalms 32:11, Psalms 64:10, Psalms 144:
15, Proverbs 16:20, and I Peter 1:8-9).
Verse 1: Though others may have been able to overhear, the audience
was the disciples (John 8:31; 15:7-9).
    •        Interesting note: the word “disciple” does not appear
anywhere from Romans through Revelation.  “Brethren” appears
@ 138 times from Romans 1:13 to Revelation 22:9.  “Saints”
appears @ 56 times from Romans 1:7 to Revelation 20:9.  The
word Christian only appears three times in all (Acts 11:26, Acts 26:
    28, and I Peter 4:16).
    •        Some qualifiers to be called brethren: Luke 8:19-21, Romans
    15:14, and II Corinthians 13:11.
    •        Saints are: I Corinthians 1:2 and Colossians 1:2
    Verse 2: Job 23:12, Proverbs 8:32-33, Luke 6:46-49, James 1:21-25, and
Romans 2:13.  Be careful how you hear (Luke 8:18); i.e. w/o
    preconceived ideas.

III. Conclusion: More to cover for those of us who want to be happy in the
Lord.  See the next lesson for more details.
