Putting On Christ and
Wearing Him Everywhere
Introduction:
A. When speaking of “putting on
Christ” we are talking about what occurs at conversion: Galatians 3:27
“For
as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
1. “put on Christ” is a phrase taken
from the Greek word “enduo?” which means: “to sink into (clothing), put
on, clothe one’s self” – Thayer.
2. The preposition “for” at the beginning
of this verse ties to the previous passage of which verse 27 explains:
Galatians 3:26 “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ
Jesus.”
3. When we “put on Christ” we become “new
creatures” (II Corinthians 5:17).
a. Colossians 3:9-10
b. Romans 6:3-7
c. Ephesians 4:21-24
B. Wearing Christ is about displaying the attributes
of Christ.
1. We are to grow in our spirituality
to be “Christ-like” (II Peter 1:3-10).
2. We are to follow (imitate) Christ and
the apostles as they imitated Him:
a. I Thessalonians 1:6
b. I Peter 2:21-22
C. When one becomes a Christian he or she is
to begin to think and act differently:
1. Romans 12:1-2
2. I Timothy 6:11
I. Wearing Christ Among Other
Brethren
A. Other Christians ought to be
able to see us as spiritual examples in:
1. Our study habits (John 5:39 and
Acts 17:10-11).
2. Our attendance and provoking one another
unto good works (Hebrews 10:24-25).
3. Our love for each other (Hebrews 13:1).
a. Ephesians 4:1-3
b. Ephesians 4:16
4. Using our abilities to further the cause
of the Kingdom (Matthew 25:14-30).
a. Displaying a pattern [consistent
and able to be followed] of good works (Titus 2:7-8).
b. Telling of our faith through our works
(James 2:14ff.).
5. Our application and concern for using Bible
Authority (Colossians 3:17 and I Peter 4:11).
6. Our willingness to acknowledge our errors
and efforts to correct them (James 5:16).
7. Our willingness to forgive our brethren
when they err (Matthew 18:21-35).
a. This needs to be qualified by
stating that we should forgive our brethren when they repent and bring
forth fruits meet for repentance (Matthew 3:8).
b. If one does not repent we are not bound
to forgive, we are bound to discipline (Matthew
18:15-17).
8. Older brothers and sisters are to be examples
to the younger (Titus 2:2-6).
9. Our willingness to correct each other:
Jude v. 22-23 “And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others
save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted
by the flesh.”
10. Our approach to worship:
a. Being on time
b. Being prepared (bringing Bible, writing
tool, being as rested as possible, clear minded, etc.).
c. Dressing appropriately (modestly, respectfully,
etc.).
d. Taking part in (singing, following along
in Bible attentively, partaking of the L.S., etc.)
B. Other Christians ought to see that we are
wearing Christ because we are around them to display that in spiritual
and social settings (Acts 2:46).
1. Our love for each other ought
to be sincere (I Peter 1:22).
2. Our desire to be with each other
ought to outweigh our desire to be among worldly folks (II Corinthians
6:14).
II. Wearing Christ Among Our
Families
A. The godly role of Husbands /
Fathers:
1. The spiritual leader (I Corinthians
11:3).
a. The man being the spiritual leader
is incorporated in the qualifications of an elder (I Timothy 3:5).
b. Notice the example of Noah and how his
family was saved by his good leadership (Genesis 7:5;7 and I Peter 3:20).
c. Notice what Joshua was able to say, and
men ask yourselves if you are leading your home enough to make this statement,
or would you have to ask permission from the to even make this statement
(Joshua 24:15)?
2. Men need to provide for their families (I
Timothy 5:8).
a. Providing for your family does
not remove the responsibilities of being the spiritual leader, loving your
wife, and being a father to your children. Do not work so much that
you forsake your more important duty of getting your family to Heaven!!
b. Husbands must remember that they have
a physical role in the marriage they must fulfill also (I Corinthians 7:3
and Hebrews 13:4).
3. Husbands need to love their wives (Ephesians
5:25;28-29).
B. The godly role of the wives / mothers:
1. To guide the home (I Timothy
5:14).
2. To be submissive [to arrange under, to
subordinate, to subject, put in subjection, to subject one’s self, obey]
to their husbands, not standing in the way of them carrying out their duties:
a. Ephesians 5:22
b. Ephesians 5:24
c. Colossians 3:18
3. God had an intended for woman to be a “help
meet” for the man (Genesis 2:18-25).
4. Notice the great qualities of a Godly
woman from I Peter 3:1-7.
III. Wearing Christ Among Those
in the World
A. Upon conversion a person is taken
from the dark world and added to the Kingdom of Christ (Colossians 1:13).
1. We are to realize that the world
can influence us (I Corinthians 15:33).
2. Yet, we can also influence to the world
(Matthew 5:14-16 / Mark 16:15-16).
B. We must realize that friendship with the
world is the opposite of friendship with God (James 4:4).
C. We must be in the world, but we cannot
be of the world (John 15:18-20).
1. We must abstain from every form
of evil (I Thessalonians 5:22).
2. Upon conversion we become “new creatures,
let us act like it (II Corinthians 5:17).
Conclusion:
A. Philippians 1:21 “For to me
to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
B. Romans 6:1-2 “What shall we say then?
Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How
shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?”
