The Parable of the Good Samaritan
Introduction:
Text: Luke 10:30-37
Reason the parable was taught: A conversation with a lawyer.  The lawyer came and asked Jesus: “…Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life”  (Luke 10:25).  The record states that this lawyer “tempted” [tested] Jesus.  Jesus answered the question with a question Luke 10:26.  The lawyer answered the question and tried to justify himself by asking Jesus “who is my neighbor” (Luke 10:27-29).
The Road to Jericho: A road known as the “bloody way”, known for robbery.

I.  The price of theft and doing harm to others

B.  Covetousness comes from within and defiles [makes unholy or unclean] the man Mark 7:20-23
C.  We should work for what we need, not steal Ephesians 4:28 “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.”

a.  It is our role to help even those whom we might consider enemies Matthew 5:40-47
III.  The Good Samaritan – How a Christian would respond
A.  Even though the Jews were no friend of the Samaritan [mixture of a Jew and a Gentile] the “Good Samaritan” had the right attitude Galatians 6:10 “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”
B.  Helping was the attitude of Christ Matthew 20:26-28
1. The Story of Lazarus and the Rich Man reveals the role of helping and the punishment for failure to do so Luke 16:19-31
Conclusion:
Who is our neighbor?  He who is in need - Luke 10:37 “And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.”
