Our Mouths Can Be Death Traps
I. Introduction: Proverbs 6:2; 12:13; 18:7 and James 3:5-6
A. We need to realize we’ll be judged for what we say: Matthew 12:33-37; cf. Proverbs 13:3; 18:21; 21:23II. Body:
1. Our talk may cause others to err: Proverbs 11:11 and I Timothy 1:3-7
2. This is why we need to avoid evil men: Proverbs 24:1-2
B. Some have forward mouths [perverse; continually disposed to disobedience and opposition]: Proverbs 6:13-19; 8:13; 10:31-32
1. Constantly causing strife: Proverbs 16:28; 18:6
2. They are also often double talkers: James 3:10; cf. Jeremiah 9:8
A. We need to learn to think before we speak: Proverbs 10:19; 15:28III. Conclusion:1. Too often we use a lack of temperance as an excuse [self-control]: II Peter 1:6; 9B. We need to allow wisdom to be in our mouths: Proverbs 8:6-9; 10:13; 32
2. We need to think when angry: Proverbs 15:1-4 and Ephesians 4:261. To speak with wisdom we have to borrow some words: Proverbs 2:6C. Is the Lord pleased with what you are saying or do you care: Luke 6:46
2. Such wisdom comes through learning: Proverbs 2:1-21. Talk from what we learn and know: Proverbs 16:23
2. Ask: what is the end [result] of my talking: Ecclesiastes 10:12-14
3. Is your speech patterned after godliness: I Timothy 6:11
A. Often, we control what we say by controlling what we hear: Proverbs 14:7; 19:27; 20:19
B. Some people would appear a lot less stupid if they just shut up: Proverbs 17:28
