Our God is an Awesome God

Introduction:

Often times Christians fall short of realizing how awesome God is. Moses penned this inspired statement: Deuteronomy 10:17 "For the Lord your God is God of Gods, and Lord of Lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward." Paul penned this by inspiration I Timothy 1:17"Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen." Jeremiah wrote: Jeremiah 10:10-13 "But the Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation. Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion. When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures."

I. Some attributes of God

A. Compassion II Kings 13:23"And the Lord was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet."
  1. As God told Moses Romans 9:15 "For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." B. Faithful I Peter 4:19"Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator."

C. Consuming fire Hebrews 12:29"For our God is a consuming fire."

1. That should be feared Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 "13. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. 14. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil." D. Creator Genesis 1:1"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."

E. Light Isaiah 60:19"The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory."

1. There is no darkness in God I John 1:5 "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." a. Darkness represents evil John 3:19 "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil."

b. Do not try and confuse darkness and call it light Isaiah 5:20 "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!"

F. God is love I John 4:8 "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love."
  1. Demonstration of God's love I John 4:9-10 "9. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."

2. Enough to make us His children I John 3:1-2 "1. Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."

a. In His love for us there is also discipline Revelation 3:19 "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent."
G. God is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit I John 5:7 "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."
  1. Holy Spirit is separate yet still God Acts 5:3-4 "3. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4. Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God."

2. The Son is God John 1:1"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

a. His name is "God with us" Matthew 1:21 "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." 3. God the Father is God John 20:17"Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God."
  a. They (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) are one in unity (as shown in I John 5:7) yet, separate in authority I Corinthians 11:3 "But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God."

b. Christ is second to God the Holy Spirit is last in authority of the three John 16:12-15"12. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

c. The order of authority is displayed even in the Great Commission Matthew 28:19 "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."

H. God is eternal Psalms 90:2"Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God."

I. God knows us inside and out Psalms 139:1-6 "1. O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. 2. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. 3. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. 4. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. 5. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. 6. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it."

J. God is good Psalms 25:8"Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way."

K. God is honest Titus 1:2"In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began."

II. God's wisdom surpasses the wisdom of man A. God's wisdom is above man's Isaiah 55:8-9 "8. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. 9. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
  1. The wisdom of man leads to death Proverbs 16:25 "There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." B. What God would have us to know is revealed in His word I Corinthians 2:4-16 " 4. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the spirit and of power: 5. That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 6. Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: 7. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: 8. Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
1..It is the Gospel we will be judged according to Romans 2:16 "In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel."
III. Do you not want to serve the God of all things? A. The Psalmist wrote: Psalms 25:1-5 "1. Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. 2. O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me. 3. Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause. 4. Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. 5. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day."

B. Salvation is in Christ Acts 4:10-12 "10. Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

1. There is only one way into Christ Romans 6:3-5 "3. Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection."
  a. To be baptized you must first have had faith from the word Romans 10:17, Repentance Acts 2:38, and Confession Acts 8:37.
