An Overview of the Old Testament (Part 3)

(Conclusion to understanding some Old Testament Terms)

  • 10 Commandments – to whom were they given?
Israel – Deuteronomy 5:1-22. Not to the Gentiles – Ephesians 2:12-13 – Aliens (A resident of a country who is not a citizen) from Israel.
  • High Priest (Wardrobe, Duties, and who was Melchisedec)
Exodus 28:1-43 institution of the priesthood, and Leviticus 16:29-34 the giving duty of the priests.

Melchisedec – Hebrews 7:1-28 – bringing us even to now whom has Christ as our High Priest, giving only ONE Sacrafice, that being himself for our sins.

  • The Passover
Exodus 12:1-20 - A time in reverence to God passing over Israel in the plague of death of the firstborns.
  • The Sabbath Day
Exodus 16:23-26 – Day of Rest. God created the earth in six days, and on the seventh (Saturday) rested Genesis 2:1-3.

An example of what happened if one worked on the Sabbath day – Numbers 15:32-36

  • The Urim (Strong’s number 224)
Exodus 28:30 – Part of the Priest’s garment. A way of communication I Samuel 28:6
  • What was a Prophet?
Prophets were chosen by God – Jeremiah 1:5. Prophets were how God spoke in Old Testament times Hebrews 1:1-2

There were false ones Matthew 7:15. Prophets had to follow God’s commands and they could fall I Kings 13:1-24.

  • Jewish Weights and Money
Weights – Talent 75 lbs., Mina 1.25 lbs., shekel .4 ounce, beka .2 ounce, and Gerah .02 ounce

Money – Talent (gold - $5,760,000) (silver - $384,000), Shekel (gold $1,920) (silver $128).

Lengths – Day’s journey 20 miles, Sabbath Day’s Journey 3,637 feet, Cubit 18 inches, Rod 9 feet, Pace 3 feet.

  • Pentecost (Feast of weeks)
Deuteronomy 16:9-12 Celebration of the Harvest
