Another Sermon Outline by Brian A. Yeager
Materialism
Introduction:
    A. Some think that wealth makes you someone and gives you an identity
    (Psalms 49:10-19).
    1. Earthly wealth brings worldly friends (Proverbs 14:20; 19:4).
    2. Earthly wealth gives status (James 2:2-4).
    B. This is not to say that it is wrong to enjoy any wealth the Lord has blessed
    you with (Ecclesiastes 5:18-19).
    1. We can enjoy our wealth, use it for good, and not trust in it (I Timothy
    6:17-19).
    2. Let us all remember that no matter how much or little we have, to be
thankful to our Creator for it (Deuteronomy 8:18).

II. Body: Your life is about more than what you own (Luke 12:15).
    A. Do not labor to be rich (Proverbs 23:4-5).
    1. Riches won’t satisfy you (Ecclesiastes 5:10-11; 6:7 and Isaiah 55:2).
    2. You can’t keep riches forever (Ecclesiastes 5:13-16).
    3. There is a reason to work (Ephesians 4:28 and I Timothy 5:8).
    4. But, let’s not try to just let “our wealth” grow (Isaiah 5:8).
    B. Realize what true wealth is (Proverbs 13:7; 15:16; 16:8-9).
    1. The word of God is true treasure (Psalms 119:72, Proverbs 8:8-11,
    and Ephesians 3:8).
    2. True wealth comes from God, and is spiritual (Revelation 2:9; 3:15-
    19).
    3. How could we love the things of this world at all (I John 2:15-17)?
    C. Realize how much temptation and sin are opportune with wealth (Proverbs
    28:20-22).
    1. Wealth often changes our focus (Matthew 16:26 and Luke 18:18-24).
    2. Wealth is deceptive (Mark 4:18-19).
    3. Consider all that Paul warned Timothy of (I Timothy 6:5-11).
    D. Consider where our hearts are (Psalms 62:10 and Luke 12:34).
    1. If hearts are after our own gain, we’ll not obey God (Ezekiel 33:31).
    2. If we are to please God, our whole hearts need to be focused on Him
    (Psalms 119:1-2).
    E. Let us learn to be content (Proverbs 30:8-9 and Philippians 4:10-13).
    1. Too many times we are not content, and thus not dependent on our
    Lord (Hebrews 13:5-6).
    2. John the Baptist taught the soldiers to be content with their wages
    (Luke 3:10-14).

III. Conclusion:
    A. Folks, let us not be known for our wealth, but for our character (Proverbs 22:
    1).
    B. Let’s lay our treasures in Heaven (Matthew 6:19-21).
    C. In the Judgment, wealth will not help you (Proverbs 11:4 and James 1:9-11).
