The Kind of Preaching That God Demands

 
Introduction:
A. Preaching is not about just getting up and going through some scriptures:
1. It’s about preaching towards the needs of those present: Acts 2 to the Jews; Acts 17:22ff. to those in Athens
2. It’s about trying to get people to be saved: I Corinthians 1:21
3. It’s about trying to help people stay saved: I Thessalonians 2:10-12
4. The Gospel is made know through preaching: Titus 1:3
B. Preaching needs to be done through God standards, not the standards of men:
1. I Corinthians 2:13
2. We cannot aim to please men through preaching: Galatians 1:10-12
I. God Demands the Kind of Preaching That Turns the World Upside Down
A. Paul and Silas were charged as being those who have caused confusion all over because of preaching: Acts 17:6
1. They were charged because: Acts 17:2
2. They were charged because: Acts 17:3
3. Sadly, there will always be those who are not happy seeing truth taught and good being done: Matthew 21:10-15
B. Those who do not like the truth will make claims that you are a trouble maker and they’ll attack:
1. Luke 23:2
2. Acts 4:1-2
3. Acts 13:49-51
4. Paul before Felix was accused: Acts 24:5
5. In the commission to preach to the lost house of Israel Jesus said: Matthew 10:22
6. WHY?  John 3:20-21
C. The kind of preaching that turns the world upside down is the kind of preaching God expects:
1. Jesus said: Matthew 10:34
2. The sword Jesus brought is: Ephesians 6:17
3. That sword, the word of God, is: Hebrews 4:12
4. The word of God cuts and causes one of two reactions:
a. Acts 2:37
b. Acts 5:27-33
II. God Demands the Kind of Preaching That Comforts the Afflicted and Afflicts the Comforted
A. The gospel, any and all aspects of preaching it, will build up those who are truly listening:
1. Acts 20:32
2. When Paul, Barnabas, Judas, and Silas delivered the letter of correction to the brethren in Antioch the result was: Acts 15:31-32
3. Those afflicted by this world and / or error are comforted when they hear the truth:
B. Those who are comfortable in sin need to be afflicted [troubled] when the hear the Gospel:
1. They need to be presented with: Romans 6:1-2
2. They need to understand that they will answer for their ways: Romans 14:12
3. They need to be told these things with plain speech: Nehemiah 8:8
III. God Demands the Kind of Preaching That Saves Souls
A. What is the purpose of preaching?
1. Romans 10:13-14; 17
2. Acts 8:30-31
3. Acts 13:26
B. To the alien sinner they need to know:
1. That they need to obey God: I John 2:17
2. That the Scriptures, as a whole, are the only source for that information: II Timothy 3:15
3. What they need to do to obey God: hearing the truth, faith, repentance, confession, immersion, and continued obedience.
4. What church they’ll be added to: Acts 2:47
5. How much there is to be a faithful Christian: Luke 9:23
C. Christians need to know:
1. To continue: Romans 2:6-7
2. To Grow: II Peter 3:18
3. How to correct what they are doing wrong: II Timothy 3:16-17; II Timothy 4:2
4. How to flee from sin: James 4:6
5. How to know truth from error: Colossians 2:8
6. To be reminded of the things we know: I Timothy 4:6, II Timothy 2:14, II Peter 1:12, etc.
7. And all manner of Christian living…
Conclusion:
A. You know those who are of God: I John 4:6
B. Next Sunday morning we’ll talk ask “How Do You Receive the Preaching of the Gospel”.
