How Do You Receive the Preaching and Teaching of the Gospel?

 

Introduction:

A. First and foremost, we should always receive the preaching of the Gospel with examination:
1. Jeremiah 14:14
2. Jeremiah 23:16
3. Jeremiah 27:14-15
4. Acts 17:11
B. Supposing truth is being preached: Hebrews 2:1
1. We should not receive truth as a strange thing: Hosea 8:12
2. We should receive truth and abide in it: Colossians 2:6-7
I. How Well Do You Receive It?
A. For those who have never obeyed the Gospel receiving it means to obey the truth that is taught:
1. Acts 8:12
a. Some would say receiving the word of God is hearing it.
b. Is that true?  Acts 8:14
2. Acts 18:8
B. For the Christian receiving the Gospel HAS TO BE a continual process in the right way:
1. Paul said: Philippians 4:9
2. We need to receive preaching of truth as it is God’s word: I Thessalonians 2:13
3. We need to be make sure we grow steadily, instead of becoming dull [slow] of hearing: Hebrews 5:8-14
4. Christians will properly receive the word of God AFTER laying aside the walls between you and God: I Peter 2:1-2
II. How Strong Do You Stand in It?
A. Notice Paul’s INSPIRED instruction: II Thessalonians 2:15
1. Paul was not asking the Thessalonians to stand for the traditions of men: Colossians 2:8
2. The doctrines of men perish with the using: Colossians 2:20-22
3. He was instructing them to follow his ways, which in and by the authority of Christ: I Corinthians 4:17
4. As Christians we need to be firm [steadfast, unchanging]: Hebrews 3:14
B. If we are going to take a stand and hold fast to what we’ve been taught that means:
1. We have to have solid footing:  Luke 6:46-49
2. We have to have solid faith: Ephesians 6:16
3. We have to be ready to be tried: James 1:12
4. We have to love the truth and be ready for the long haul: Hebrews 6:10-12
III. How Long Will You Remember It?
A. We can forget the word of God:
1. Proverbs 3:1-2
2. Hosea 4:6
3. James 1:25
B. Methods we can use to help remember the teaching and preaching of the Gospel:
1. Reading and studying God’s word as to the Jews which sought to Kill Jesus he said unto them: John 5:38-39
2. Application: Luke 8:20-21
3. Being reminded: II Peter 1:12
4. Most of all, we must desire to know and remember what we are taught of the Lord: Psalms 119:11; 16
Conclusion:
A. If you will not receive the preaching of the Gospel, stand in it, and remember it; you have rejected salvation: I Corinthians 15:1-2
B. Let’s not follow in the footsteps of God’s people of the past: Isaiah 5:13
