A Different Type of Institutionalism Among Us Today
(Part One)
By: Brian A. Yeager

The idea of supporting human institutions with the Lord’s money among churches of Christ is absurd to most “conservative brethren”.  Using the Lord’s money to support orphan homes, colleges, etc. is of course unauthorized in the New Testament.  Most “conservative brethren” would reject such practices because there is no command, example, or necessary inference within the New Testament to authorize such a practice.  Thus, doing such things would be sinful (Leviticus 10:1-2, Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32, Proverbs 30:5-6, Matthew 15:1-9, Galatians 1:6-12, and Revelation 22:18-19).  However, when it comes to the question of human organizations being formed to carry out certain works of the New Testament church, these same “conservative brethren” seem not to care about finding authority in the New Testament for theses things.  Though the word of God is clear that we must do all things with biblical authority (Colossians 3:17 and I Peter 4:11), none is sought for such things.

In this article we are going to examine every case in the New Testament where human organizations carried out evangelism, benevolence, or edification.  We will find every Scripture in the New Testament that shows such human organizations carrying out worship services.  Why?  Because we need to find the Scriptures that authorize Florida College’s preacher training program, Florida College’s daily worship service (chapel service), Florida College’s annual Bible Lectureship (evangelism).  The same examples of course would go to show how the Akin Foundation can support Gospel preachers and how the Guardian of Truth Foundation can have a Bible Lectureship and worship service.  Thus, pay close attention to each and every command, example, and necessary inference we will find so that you can know where authority lies within the Scriptures for the formation of human organizations to carry out evangelism, worship, preacher support, etc.

Conclusion

With so many examples that would support Florida College’s work of training preachers, holding worship services, and conducting Bible Lectureships, it is amazing that we have not formed more colleges to do these works.  With so many examples of organizations that supported evangelists in the New Testament it is a surprise that more organizations such as the Akin Foundation have not been established.  Such is the same with the works of the Guardian of Truth Foundation earlier cited in this article.  Now, all sarcasm aside, we must realize that if the Lord intended us to form human organizations to carry out specific works – HE WOULD HAVE SAID SO.  To deny the fact that God would have supplied us with Scriptures for organizations doing the work of the local church, is to deny the all-sufficiency of the word of God (Deuteronomy 29:29, II Timothy 3:16-17, and II Peter 1:3).  I did not run out of ink under the above subheadings, there simply were no Scriptures to list under any of them!  Continue reading this series of articles as it will be my intention to expose the false arguments often used in favor of para-church organizations.
