Is
Christ Deity?
Introduction:
Deity means
God, so we are going to study whether or not Christ is God. Another way
of stating our study would be: "Is Christ God?"
I.
His Birth Name Shows Him to be Deity
A.
Prophesy of Christ’s name – Isaiah 7:14"Therefore
the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive,
and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."
1.
"God with us" Matthew 1:23"Behold,
a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall
call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."
B. He will
reign and be known as the "Son of God" Luke
1:31-35
C. The
inspired word calls Christ Deity I John
5:20 “And
we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding,
that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even
in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.”
1. I
Timothy 1:16-17“16. Howbeit for this
cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth
all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe
on him to life everlasting. 17. Now unto the King eternal, immortal,
invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
2. Romans
9:5 “Whose
are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is
over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.”
D. Jesus refers
to Himself as the “Alpha and the Omega” Revelation
22:13-16
1.
Christ and the Father are ONE John 17:21-22
II.
His Actions Show Him to Be Deity
A.
Omnipresent – Matthew 28:20"Teaching
them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I
am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
1. Matthew
18:20“For where two or three are gathered
together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
B. Omniscient
– Luke 5:22“But
when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What
reason ye in your hearts?”
C. Omnipotent
(Did so with His own power, not the power of the Spirit) – John
11:30-44 – Christ brings Lazarus back
to life
D. Some
would say [Jeff Asher, David Padfield, and the Faith in Facts Group] that
Christ worked as the Holy Spirit moved Him. They fail to see that
the Holy Spirit was in subjection to Christ John
16:13-15
III.
The Bible tells us that He is Deity
A. I
Timothy 3:16"And without controversy
great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified
in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on
in the world, received up into glory."
B. John
1:1-4;14 "1.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God. 2. The same was in the beginning with God. 3. All things were
made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4. In
him was life; and the life was the light of men. 14. And the Word was made
flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the
only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."
C. Who
died to purchase the church (CHRIST / BEING GOD – Ephesians
5:25) - Acts
20:28 "Take
heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the
Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he
hath purchased with his own blood."
D. Christ
was said he was "I am" before Abraham’s days John
8:58 "Jesus
said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am."
1.
God the Father too was "I am" Exodus 3:14"And
God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto
the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."
IV.
If Christ is not Deity Then There are Errors in the Bible
A.
Notice the following scriptures and the comparison scriptures showing that
Christ is God:
1.
Glory to none other Isaiah 42:8
-
a.
Honor to Christ John 5:22-23
2. None Holy
but God I Samuel 2:2
-
a.
Christ the Holy One Acts 3:13-14
3. God created
Sabbath Genesis 2:3
-
a.
Christ Lord of the Sabbath Matthew 12:8
4. God is
light I John 1:5
-
a.
Christ is the light John 8:12
5. The world
did not know God I John 3:1
-
a.
The world did not know Christ John 1:1;10
6. Worship
God and God alone Matthew 4:9-10
[Jesus said this, therefore it was no secret to Him] -
a. Jesus
accepted worship – Matthew 8:2, Matthew
9:18, Matthew 14:33, Matthew 28:9, Mark 5:6, and Luke 24:52.
b. If
Jesus had the Spirit the same way the Apostles did, why did the Spirit
not guide Jesus to stop all those who worshipped Him from doing so?
Did Jesus and the Spirit fail and Peter and the Spirit succeed in doing
right? Acts 10:25-26“And
as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and
worshipped him. But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself
also am a man.”
c. If
Jesus accepted worship, when he knew that only God was to be worshipped,
then Jesus sinned. Yet, the Bible calls Jesus sinless – Hebrews
4:14-15 “Seeing
then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens,
Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have
not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities;
but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”
Conclusion:
Many, many more
arguments could be made from the scriptures to provide proof that Jesus
is Deity. Yet, for those hiding behind the true agenda of this false
doctrine nothing will do no matter how man scriptures we present.
If we do not believe that He is who he is you will die in your sins John
8:24.
Note the insanity
of this false position:
“Sept 19, 1989;
John Welch
I Tim. 2:5 says,
'There
is one mediator
between God and man, (the revised versions say) himself,
man Christ Jesus.'
Ladies and gentlemen, Jesus Christ did not give up
divinity for
just 33 years. He gave it up for all time. All time. It
wasn't just
temporarily as Superman stepped out of the phone booth. He
gave it up for
all time. He became one of us, ladies and gentlemen. He
has been raised
by the right hand of God. He has been given a name that
is above every
name, but he is not equal with God again where he was
before. You
and I should appreciate the sacrifice of Jesus for us. He is
the Son of God,
but he became one of us in all points like us.
"Heb. 10:12-13,
'This man after he had offered one sacrifice for sin sat
down on the
right hand of God from henceforth expecting till his enemies
be made his
footstool.' (Could spend a lot time talking about
premillennialism
from that passage). Verse 21 says 'having an high
priest over
the house of God.' A high priest had to be a man. He is
still our high
priest -- himself
