Bring Them To Repentance

Introduction:

This lesson will be speaking of those that are Christians and have fallen away. To fall away from the Lord's people you must first be of the Lord's people.

To do this you must:

  • Hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Mark 16:15-16 "15. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." Which is also known as the Gospel of the Kingdom Matthew 24:14
  • Believing that Gospel (not just that Christ is the Son of God) Acts 8:12 "But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women." - It is impossible to please God without faith Hebrews 11:6.
  • Repenting of sin Acts 3:19 "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord."
  • Confess Christ Acts 8:36-38" 36. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37. And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him."
  • Be baptized to have your sins washed away Acts 22:16 "And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord."- And to be added to the church of our Lord I Corinthians 12:12-13 and Galatians 3:27.
Sin is transgression of the Law I John 3:4"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." If we stand before the Lord as sinners in the Day of Judgment we will pay the eternal price/ Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." We have forgiveness by as Christians if we walk in the light and confess our transgressions I John 1:7-9 "7. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

I. The saved can fall away (Apostasy)

A. You will fall away if you live after the flesh Romans 8:12-13 "12. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live." 1. Living after the flesh is sin Galatians 5:19-21 "19. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20.Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21. Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God." B. Some will depart from the faith and become teachers of error I Timothy 4:1-3 "1. Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2. Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3. Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth." 1. False Teachers will be judged II Peter 2:1 "But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction." C. The over confident can fall away I Corinthians 10:12 "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall." 1. How does pride work? Proverbs 16:18 "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."  D. Whole congregations can fall away. For example Ephesus Revelation 2:1-7

E. Jesus taught a parable of a fallen man Luke 15:11-24

II. What does it mean to repent? A. To change Acts 26:20"But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance." 1. Showing fruits of repentance (change) Matthew 3:8 "Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance." B. Sorrow brings repentance II Corinthians 7:9-10 " 9. Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. 10. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death." 1. Example of this is found in Simon Acts 8:13-24. Notice verses 23-24. C. God hopes that all will repent II Peter 3:9 "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." 1. Repentance is a MUST! Luke 13:3;5 "3. I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 5. I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish." D. Ignorance will not be an excuse Acts 17:30 "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:" 1. There will be those that do some good but fail at some point James 2:10 "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all." III. What Should be done in the case of the brother or sister that will not repent? A. It is our concern Galatians 6:1-2 "1. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ." 1. Christians are to confess sins one to another and count on each others prayers James 5:16"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." a. If a Christian helps save a sinner he does a great dead James 5:19-20 "19. Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; 20. Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins." B. The leadership of the congregation needs to realize that they will answer for the flock Hebrews 13:17"Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you."

C. The congregation MUST withdraw from EVERY brother or sister that walks disorderly II Thessalonians 3:6 "Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us."

1. This act is an act of love and should be done as such to bring shame on the erring II Thessalonians 3:14-15 "14. And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed. 15. Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother." D. In matters of private transgressions between brothers God gives a plan Matthew 18:15-17 "15. Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. 16. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican."

E. In times when one teaches error God gives the what to do and why Romans 16:17-18 "17. Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple."

F. Loving our brethren is a command I John 2:7-11 "7. Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8. Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9. He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes."

1. If we love God we will also love our brethren I John 4:21 "And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also."
Conclusion:

Anytime in which a Christian fails to serve God according to the pattern God has set forth that individual is not in a right relationship with God. When someone is disobedient to the word of God they are separated from Him Isaiah 59:1-2 and II John 9. This needs to be corrected!
