Behold Therefore the Goodness and Severity of God
|
I. Introduction: Romans 11:13-23
A. God is not unequal, but balanced (Ezekiel 18:25-32).
1. Our God is a just [lawful] god (Isaiah 45:20-22).
2. He is not a respecter of persons (Acts 10:34, Romans 2:11,
Colossians 3:24-25, and I Peter 1:17).
B. God’s Judgment on mankind is really in our hands (John 5:28-29).
1. Heaven is yours for the taking (I John 5:11-12).
2. We cannot play the “not my fault game” (Genesis 3:9-18).
II. Body: Two sides to God (I Chronicles 28:9).
A. A look into the Goodness of God (Lamentations 3:25-26).
1. Here on earth He takes care of His own (Psalms 55:22, Isaiah 49:15,
Romans 8:28-39, Philippians 4:6-7, and I Peter 5:6-7).
2. Eternal blessings await God’s people (John 10:27-28, John 12:25-
26, II Corinthians 5:1, I Peter 1:3-4, and I John 2:24-25).
B. A look into the severity of God (Hebrews 10:30-31).
1. On earth, God will punish the unjust (Genesis 19:17-26; cf. Luke 17:
32, Numbers 20:1-12; cf. Deuteronomy 3:23-28, Deuteronomy 20:16-
20, I Kings 20:28-43, II Kings 2:23-24, Jeremiah 15:1-7, Matthew 23:34-
24:34, and Acts 5:1-10).
2. Eternally, God will have no mercy on the disobedient (Matthew 10:28,
Mark 9:43-48, John 15:6, II Thessalonians 1:7-9, and Revelation 20:14-
15).
C. Seeing those things, what manner of persons ought we to be (II Peter 3:9-
11)?
1. If we want God on our side, we must be righteous (I Peter 3:12).
2. To be righteous, we must be obedient (Romans 6:16-18).
III. Conclusion:
A. What we have seen is certainly not the God people think we serve (i.e. the
perversion of I John 4:16).
B. Knowing God enables us to better understand godly fear (Hebrews 12:28-
29).
